As public real estate, streets are often used for profit-making. Cafés, sidewalk sales, stalls in pedestrian malls all reinforce the public-ness of the street space that now seems odd.
They also retrace the transient nature of trade in temporary stalls, before stores became a permanent fixture of the street or square. Who needs private real estate when the public one is already there and will do? And what better property than a corner lot to display and sell goods where traffic is high and visibilty superb.

Open for a mere 2 months and still under construction, we checked into the Best Western Supalai in the north-east tip of Phuket island. The private real estate that was incomplete in no way hindered the fact that we had this top-notch resort all to ourselves… empty, although a huge group arrived just as we checked out.
